Hino Rei

The Fire Soul Senshi

Hino Rei first appears in the series in Episode #10 (Episode #7 in the NA version) when a disappearing bus-load of people leads Usagi to the Hikawa Jinja. She is the third Sailor Senshi in the series and the second one Usagi meets. She discovers her identity after she discovers the true identity of one of the temple workers (Jadeite) at the Hikawa Jinja. That and her ofuda (anti-evil scrolls) made her a descent fighter even before she discovered her identity.
Rei-chan lives her life at the Hikawa Jinja as a miko (apprentice priestess). She lives there with her grandfather (who is training her to be a Shinto priestess) and a homeless man named Kumada Yuuichirou. As a miko, she has the power to banish evil spirits through the use of her ofuda, scrolls with the words "Akuryo Taisan" written on them. She once used these in the Sailor Moon R Movie to take down a whole horde of people possessed by Kesinian. She also uses it to protect places or people as a sort of ward to keep the evil spirits away. It's quite a useful skill of hers, whether she's in senshi form or civilian form.

Rei-chan also possesses some descent psychic powers, a sixth sense if you might say. With it, she is able to sense evil and can also predict the future using the sacred fire at her temple. This precognitive ability of hers is most prevalent in Sailor Moon S, when she senses the coming of the "Silence" throughout much of the season.

Rei-chan has sort of a bitchy personality, which really shows itself in the first 2 seasons. She's also very bossy towards many of the people she comes in contact with, especially Usagi. Immediately after becoming a senshi, she questions Usagi's ability as leader of the Sailor Team and wants the job for herself. But just like all the other senshi, Rei's personality too grows and evolves over the course of the series. She transforms from the bossy, independent, self-righteous person she appears as to a more lax, sensitive, sentimental person. She especially shows this change around Usagi. And this interaction is interesting in its own way. Usagi and Rei immediately do not get along when they first meet. But you know what they say, those who argue the most are often closer than one thinks. And that holds true between these two. Though they argue a lot almost throughout the Anime, they are clearly the best of friends, though they are reluctant to admit it or even show it in front of the others.

Her home life, in my opinion, is by far the most interesting and fun-filled of all the senshi. Her grandfather is used mainly for comic relief in episodes revolving around Rei and the Hikawa Jinja. He is very perverted, with the mind of a man in his early 20's. Not only does he like to gawk at the younger girls, especially the Inner Senshi girls Rei loves to bring to the temple, but he also likes to come up with clever schemes to lure them to his temple. I have yet to see a more serious moment involving Grandpa, but he's definitely one you can laugh with. As far as Yuuichirou living with her goes, that itself is a nice little almost-romantic story. He fell in love with Rei at first sight, and moved into the temple when he was offered a place to stay. Though Rei is somewhat oblivious to his feelings toward her, Grandpa knows all too well Yuuichirou's ulterior motive for  living there. Through harsh training, tons of housekeeping, and various other work such as that, Grandpa seems to be doing a good job in preparing him for a possible life with his granddaughter. As I said, Rei is somewhat oblivious to Yuuichirou's feelings toward her. She is often very cold towards him, as she is with most people. But she herself can't help but see the gentleman in him, even if she is reluctant to admit it. Any time she does show some affection is when he's asleep or away. Typical Rei-chan, always the independent type.

As a senshi, Sailor Mars' attacks are all fire based. Her harsher personality and powerful attacks, rivaled only by Sailor Jupiter, come together to make a beautiful senshi who isn't afraid to kick some ass. Her powers of fire are also useful in burning vines, ropes, hair, and other entanglements. Her Shinto powers also come in handy as a senshi, and add to her already burning hot powers.

Rei-chan is my other favorite senshi. Unlike my love for Ami-chan, my love for Rei-chan grew over time. After watching the series and writing fanfics for quite a while, I've grown to like Rei-chan. She's a girl with attitude (I have some sorta thing with girls-with-attitude. Must be one of my more twisted fasciations, though it's more towards fictional girls than real-life girls) She's also the sexiest of the senshi, in my opinion, I mean, she's the only senshi who really shows off her legs and wears high-heels. I also enjoy watching her in action and enjoy writing fanfics on her as well.

At home, with the other senshi, or in senshi form, Rei is always someone you can count on to call you stupid, give you the best advice, love you, or keep that school bully away from you.

Attacks

Fire Soul (Mars Fire Ignite)

Sailor Mars's first attack. She clasps her hands together and holds her pointer fingers to her head. A fire ball forms and she points it at her opponent to send it flying towards them.

Fire Soul Bird (Mars Firebird Strike)

A rare attack by Sailor Mars in the Sailor Moon R season. She throws one of her anti-evil scrolls and ignites it with Fire Soul. This creates a flaming bird which dives down at her opponent.

Aku Ryo Tai San (Mars Fireballs Charge)

This is Rei-chan's most versatile attack. The learns this before she even knew what a Sailor Senshi was. She uses her scrolls to ward off evil spirits or to immobilize enemies. With the words, tranlated into english "Evil Spirits, Begone", she throws one of more of these at the enemy. Unlike her other attacks, she uses this in both her senshi and civilian forms.

Burning Mandala (Mars Celestial Surround)

Sailor Mars' most used attack. She waves her hand of fire in a circle around her, forming 8 Japanese characters. With the sound of a mandala playing in the background, she then points her finger at her opponent and the characters become balls of energy, which she fires in the form of fiery rings.

Mars Flame Sniper

Sailor Mars' most powerful attack. As she says "Mars...", the sign of Mars with a bow and arrow in the background appears on her hand. Then, in a burst of flames, a fiery bow appears in her hand. Then fires a fiery arrow at her opponent. Best thing about this attack is that she can delay the time she strings the bow and the time she releases her fiery arrow at her opponent.
