Characters in the Russell Hino Epic
Face it, without the canon characters, the Russell Hino Epic wouldn't be Sailor Moon fanfics at all. This is special commentary on each of the canon characters as they are written in the Russell Hino Epic. Each section focuses on the character's main role's) throughout the epic. They also focus on the how the characters interact with both other canon characters and the original characters of both alignments, good or evil. Next, they focus on major similarities and differences in character between the character in the Sailor Moon series, and the Russell Hino Epic. Last, many of these characters have some kind of catchy, witty, dramatic, or memorable quote in some point throughout the Russell Hino Epic. The Russell Hino Epic may be built on original characters, but the canon characters give the original characters their background and their interaction. Without the canon characters, the original characters would have no relevance to Sailor Moon. |

Tsukino Usagi
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
As in the Anime, Tsukino Usagi appears in the Russell Hino Epic as the Princess of the Moon Kingdom and the true hero of the epic, more so than even Hino Kyodai himself. She first appeared in Chapter 2 of "Brother of Fire" when Rei invited everyone over to the Hikawa Jinja to meet Kyodai. In the first couple fanfics, Usagi carries on her role quite stereotypically: as an overly giddy girl, a crybaby, all play and little work, and most of all the legendary sailor-suited pretty soldier known as Sailor Moon. As Sailor Moon, she also carries her role quite stereotypically in the first couple fanfics. This begins to change in "Forest Fire" (3rd fanfic) in her battle with Titanius. In the battle, she takes more fight to the enemy rather than just finishing it off, yet comically boasts after sending Titanius on a ride. Then again, like in the Anime, she fights with her heart, and is always doing what's best for those close to her, even if it isn't always the best decision. As the Russell Hino Epic progresses from fanfic to fanfic, Usagi gets more of a role, both as Usagi and as Sailor Moon. As Usagi, she gets more stage time in various mall scenes, slice-of-life scenes, and even buddy-to-buddy conversations with each of the other Senshi and even Kyodai. Like in the Anime, she always seems to lift the spirits of those whom she's with. As Sailor Moon, she gets much more attention in the battle scenes, much like she was in "Forest Fire". Not only does she play the legendary superhero role that she often plays in the Anime, but as a member of the Sailor Team, she fights alongside the other Senshi as equals. She even gets the occasional one-on-one showdown with a villain or two. Usagi's character develops more and more as the Russell Hino Epic progresses. And further more it shall . |

Memorable Quotes
"How could you do it to those students. They got to know you very well in only a few days. They trusted you and you betrayed them." ~Wildfire - Prologue "I stand for love and justice... and part of that love is forgiving one another for the times we fall short, the times we do wrong, the times we hurt each other." ~Wildfire - Chapter 3 "You know, Darien only knew of his feelings for me before Queen Beryl had totally taken him over, and before he died. I never got to have with Darien what you now have with Amy. So what is it like being with someone you truly love so much?" ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 3 "Looks like my whining and crying came to good use after all." ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 3 "Yes! Homerun! Sailor Moon 1, Titanius zip." ~Forest Fire |
Mizuno Ami
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Ami first appeared in the Russell Hino epic in Chapter 2 of Brother of Fire, when Rei introduces Kyodai to her friends. Ami-chan is another important character in the Russell Hino Epic. She takes on quite a role in both the Silver Millennium and the present. In the Silver Millennium, she was destined to marry Prince Ramón (present-day Hino Kyodai). Even if they were destined to marry later in their lives, they found love in each other on their own. Throughout the Silver Millennium, Ami-chan and Kyodai share an almost fairy-tale relationship with each other, attending fine ballroom dances together, since Queen Serenity held them often. Much of their complimenting of each other is more metaphorical. They share this relationship all the way until the fall of the Moon Kingdom. In the present, Ami-chan has much less of a role in the first few fanfics than she did in the Silver Millennium. She's the quieter of the group whenever the girls are together, often sitting somewhat distant from them, carrying out her stereotypical "book worm" role. Yet, later in the Russell Hino Epic, she begins to take on more of a role, especially when hints to her liking Kyodai and vice versa are shown. She is more assertive with her friends and even goes out on group activities more. All in all, Ami-chan brings in the epic romance later on in the Russell Hino Epic, which brings her out of her stereo-typical "always the shy girl" persona. |
How She Interacts w/ canon characters
Ami-chan takes on 2 different roles in the Russell Hino Epic, one before her feelings for Kyodai, and the other after. In the beginning, Ami-chan plays her stereotypical role with the Sailor Senshi, usually the shy girl of the group, rarely getting herself into their affairs. She usually keeps to herself in her studying, yet still finds time to spend with Usagi and her other friends. Later on in the Russell Hino Epic, especially after Ami-chan realizes her feelings for Kyodai, she starts spending more time with her friends, especially with Makoto. These meetings with Makoto usually involve sharing romantic views and Makoto's past relationship with Kyodai. She even shares with Ami-chan why she's still a great friend of his. |
How She Interacts w/ original characters
As Mizuno Ami, she is rather passive, not even interacting with the original characters very much at all, especially in the beginning of the Russell Hino Epic. This all changes when she finds out about her feelings for Kyodai. Though she is romantically involved with Kyodai, their dates are not so often as they were in the Silver Millennium. She usually spends her time alone, studying almost non-stop. This gives her little time to spend with Kyodai, much less a date. But she has her moments, especially when Kyodai returns home after a weekend in America looking at cars. She shares a tearful reunion with him, just as if it were to come out of a storybook. When she does date him, she worries about what moves to make, what things to say, feeling that she has to impress Kyodai. With that, she makes her flirty advances rather indistinct. Her relationship with him can be puzzling, but she's still very much in love with him. As Sailor Mercury, she becomes almost a totally different person. In the beginning of the Russell Hino Epic, she, like the other Senshi, is skeptical of Tuxedo Inferno's intentions. This skepticism isn't as severe as the other Senshi's and it dies rather quickly, until Tuxedo Inferno becomes the bad guy. She then becomes a more assertive fighter. This proves true in her later battles with Titanius, evil Tuxedo Inferno, and even Kokorono Meijin. After the Senshi discover Tuxedo Inferno's identity, her feelings for him make her a good ally to Tuxedo Inferno, and even bring out deeper feelings for Kyodai, the "Warrior of Fire". Against Meijin, it becomes a battle of the minds, as both are highly intelligent. Expect more interaction between Ami and Meijin in later fics. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Ami-chan maintains her timid character throughout the epic, and often keeps to herself, especially in the beginning of the epic. Ami-chan's retains her strategic role in battle as Sailor Mercury, often either coming up with battle strategy or improvising with it. Ami-chan is a little more assertive in her romantic approaches than in the Anime, often doing a few things out of character, like checking out and even doing research on a particular guy. Ami-chan's love life gets a lot of attention, yet her past feelings for Urawa are rarely referenced. |
Memorable Quotes
"That completely proves my theory. The Negaverse was the cause of all that negative energy within him, the conflict within himself, and his hatred for us. He must've overcome that battle within himself and realized he was being played like a deck of cards." ~Wildfire - Chapter 3 "It's the way he wears his face when he's studying, kind of the way I look when I study. I never thought that kind of look could be so, saddening, as if he's looking for someone too, but like me doesn't seem to have the time for it..." ~Blue Flame |
Hino Rei
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
In my opinion, and in my fics, Rei-chan is probably the most important canon character in the Russell Hino Epic. She first appeared in the very first scene of my first fic, "Brother of Fire", minus the prologue. The main reason she's the most important character in the epic is because she's Kyodai's younger sister. She introduces him to the rest of her Senshi friends, which is how he becomes romantically involved with three of them. Big pimp he was, eh? All in all, Rei helped to bring Kyodai into the storyline with all the canon characters. Without her, Kyodai would be just another name, just another character. Rei does more than serve as a canon character, playing the role of Kyodai's sister. With her blood relation to Kyodai, she tends to bring more Hikawa Jinja scenes into the epic. This also brings Yuuichirou and her grandfather more into the spotlight and even creates two shrine workers named Romano and Gabianni. Rei's fire readings even get more attention throughout the epic. As in the Anime, she uses them to reveal odd feelings and search for enemies. |
How She Interacts w/ canon characters
Rei tends to be the friend of the canon characters, yet she still shares her arrogant and saucy attitude towards Usagi. Like Makoto, she is quite protective of the Senshi, especially in battle. Also, like Makoto, she shows a more vengeful attitude towards those who hurt her friends. Rei shares close ties with Ami, especially when it comes to times where it's just the two, and especially when her brother is the topic of discussion. Rei was one of the first to find out Ami's feelings for Kyodai, though she never said much about it. Rei also tends to boast about her brother a lot to the other senshi, especially when she first introduced them to her Senshi friends. |
How She Interacts w/ original characters
Of course, Rei shares a brother/sister relationship with Kyodai. In this relationship, it varies from she and Kyodai almost hating each other's guts and fighting, to friendly teasing, to even heart to heart talks and sisterly love. Though she may not show it much towards him, but through all that boasting about him to her friends, she actually looks up to him and is quite proud of him and his achievements. In the temple, she shares a more family relationship with Romano and Gabianni. Gabianni, especially, is often a person she looks up to, being the older of the two, and is often her chauffeur. Yet, with her stereotypical attitude, she can be quite saucy towards them at times. Yet, she is their friend and will always be there for them. She especially shares this care with her brother Kyodai, especially if something's bothering him that he doesn't want to admit. If there's one person Kyodai can't hide his feelings very well from, it's his sister. She'll poke and prod 'til he spills it. As a Senshi, she is somewhat skeptical of Tuxedo Inferno when he first appears in the present, as all the Senshi are. She is mostly the one do does the major probing of Tuxedo Inferno, usually by the means of her fire readings. As for Tuxedo Inferno, Sailor Mars takes on a major role in the beginning few fics of the Russell Hino Epic. Since she and Kyodai share a strong bond, Kyodai often senses not only danger nearby, but also whenever Sailor Mars is in danger. Her being in danger is often what prompts Tuxedo Inferno to show up in the middle of a battle and help the Senshi in their efforts. After she learns Tuxedo Inferno is her brother, she becomes more protective of him and works much better with him in battle. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Rei-chan is harsh at times, sassy, and also quite bossy towards both original and canon characters. Typical Rei-chan. Though Rei-chan is harsh towards most of the characters, she does care very much about them and is often the one cheering them up, especially in one-on-one conversations. Much about Rei-chan, the temple, her character, her fire readings, and even Yuuichirou's feelings for her gets more attention throughout the Russell Hino Epic, being quite a central character. Rei-chan has more variations of her attacks, including one similar to Tuxedo Inferno's "Hands of Fire". Rei's psychic abilities are rarely referenced, until later in the epic. |
Memorable Quotes
"Dammit, Gabianni, I don't want to just sit here and wonder if my only brother's even coming home. Just take me there and we'll both see why I'm having this clairvoyant sense." ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 1 "All this time, those few months we knew Tuxedo Inferno. Of all the 14 years I knew Russell, I never knew he had this kind of power." ~Children of Fire - Chapter 3 "If you'd come down here tux boy, we could do it together." ~Children of Fire - Chapter 4 "You don't have to hide those feelings of defeat anymore. We know how you feel, and have experienced that defeat ourselves. There will be other battles, but for now, let's get on with our lives for now." ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 2 |
Kino Makoto
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Makoto first appeared in the Russell Hino epic in Chapter 2 of Brother of Fire, when Rei introduces Kyodai to her friends. Makoto immediately found interest in Kyodai. Later on, she became romantically involved with Kyodai for a short time, only to end in a violent temperament. Though she lost love for him, she still cared a lot about him as a great friend and played a role in helping Ami out with getting together with him. Makoto serves a major role in the Russell Hino Epic. Since Kyodai moved back to the temple with Rei, the Senshi meetings could no longer be held at the temple, for fear that Kyodai may accidentally discover their identities. Makoto holds the Senshi meetings at her apartment, typically in her living room where a chair and 2 couches surrounding a coffee table give a good "executive board meeting" type environment. In that role, Makoto's apartment gets quite a bit of attention throughout the epic, with numerous Makoto's Apartment scenes and detailed descriptions of her place of residence. In future fics, expect to see more of Makoto's apartment, whether for Senshi meetings or slice-of-life scenes. |
How She Interacts w/ canon characters
Makoto's interactions with the canon characters has undergone changes throughout the Russell Hino Epic. In the first few fanfics, she has a crush on Kyodai at the fact that he admired women with strength. This sparks up a rivalry with her friend Minako, fighting to win the heart of Hino Kyodai. This rivalry only consists of some almost Usagi/Rei arguments, only over guys. This rivalry continues even after Minako and Kyodai break up, with the fact that Makoto now has the opportunity. After her relationship with Kyodai, Makoto assumes more of the good friend role, one who is there for people. Especially in the later fanfics, Makoto helps her friends out in their many situations, especially Ami and her feelings for Kyodai. When it comes to Kyodai, Makoto's experience with him more than helps her help her friend out. Even in Mind Over Fire, Makoto's words of wisdom remain fresh in the mind of her friend. How she'll interact in later fics should be a treat no matter if they change or remain the same. |
How She Interacts w/ original characters
Makoto's interactions with the original characters varies widely, depending on character, throughout the Russell Hino Epic. At first, when she meets Kyodai, she falls in love with him at almost first sight, though she had to compete with Minako. She admires the fact that he likes the same things as she does, athletics-wise. They share a love for sports, physical exercise, and Martial Arts. Even after they dated, Makoto still shares a great friendship with Kyodai. She still cheers for him and coaches him in his exercises and athletic practices, and is even there for him as a friend on a few occasions. As a Senshi, she's quite skeptical of Tuxedo Inferno's intentions and immediately labels him as being of the Dark Kingdom. She is quite hateful towards him at first, and even comes close to challenging him at times. When Tuxedo Inferno was brainwashed, she is often the first one who challenges him to battle. She musters up out all those past skeptical feelings and hatred and goes all out against him. In the end, she gains better respect for him and even becomes just as protective over him as even Rei, being his good friend and all. As her character illustrates in the Anime, she is quite hateful towards the original villains of the Russell Hino epic as she is with the canon villains. However, one particular villain really gets to her, Kokorono Meijin. This hatred begins when Makoto challenges Meijin with her physical abilities, only to be stopped and beaten down by her psychic powers. In battle, Makoto shows this hatred and aggressiveness quite explicitly, using that physical strength of hers to her advantage. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Makoto shows the same aggression in the Russell Hino Epic that she shows in the Anime, if not a little more explicitly, especially as Sailor Jupiter. Also, like in the Anime, she tends to fight with her physical strength before using her powers. Although she still retains her very short temper, Makoto assumes more of the "good friend" role. Makoto shares a deeper friendship with the other senshi and is often giving them advise on the various events in their lives, also through that "good friend" role, Makoto is quite protective of all her friends. Through the many senshi meetings, Makoto's apartment, even to the very details, gets a lot more attention in the Russell Hino Epic than in the Anime. Like in the Anime, Makoto carries on with cleaning, cooking, rearranging, shopping, and other house care chores, bringing out her more feminine self. |
Memorable Quotes
"A true antique, locking the age-old fire inside... just like your dark purple eyes, only they release those fires locked inside." ~Forest Fire "You idiot, the goal was three feet in front of you. Coach, send someone in who can actually kick." ~Forest Fire "Gotta crawl out of that shell sometime, Ames." ~Blue Flame "You think your mind is any match for my muscle?" ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 2 |
Aino Minako
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Minako first appeared in the Russell Hino epic in Chapter 2 of Brother of Fire, when Rei introduces Kyodai to her friends. Almost immediately after Rei introduces him, the hot-for-guys Minako gawks at him and hops onto his lap, wrapping his arms around him. Not long after, she and Kyodai double date at the movies. That was the beginning of the first present-day romance in the Russell Hino Epic. Her romantic involvement is filled with dates, mall visits, movies, and enjoying each other's company. But, it was only short lived as the ever-so-guy-crazy Minako loses interest in him. (no wonder she can't find a guy, she doesn't keep them for long) Early in the Russell Hino Epic, Minako serves a major role, especially in the romance scenes of the first 2 fics. Yet, these romantic moments can often be interrupted by the Dark Kingdom's attack on the people of Tokyo, prompting Minako to leave in the middle of a date. Minako gets considerable amounts of stage time in the beginning of the epic, but later on as their romance ends, Minako gets less and less stage time. She goes from being the romantic center to numerous appearances in battle, where she serves numerous roles. In battle, she goes from being the hero of the battle, to a regular participant, to even a casualty of battle. Though she gets little attention now, expect her to assume more of a role in later fics. |
How She Interacts w/ canon characters
Throughout the Russell Hino Epic, Minako is more of the fun-lover of the group, as her character portrays, often wanting to go shopping, hanging out at the park, or playing games at the arcade with the other girls. With such a lively spirit, it's quite easy for her to cheer her friends up. Early in the Russell Hino epic, she develops a friendly rivalry with Makoto for the affections of a certain Hino Kyodai. While dating him, she becomes quite a braggart in the way she carries herself around Makoto. But, this all comes back to haunt her when she decides to leave Kyodai. So much for bragging rights. Afterwards, the rivalry ends, and she retains her close friendship with Makoto. As a senshi and during senshi gatherings, Minako's character makes a complete 180. She becomes more serious about her role as a Sailor Senshi, being the senshi leader back in the Silver Millennium. She contributes to much of the strategy and analysis, as well as breaking up tough love squabbles between Usagi and Rei. In battle, she stands true as a sailor-suited pretty solder for love and justice. She works well with the Sailor Team and rarely has any major grudges against the canon villains, except if they hurt her friends. Whether as the victor or the defeated, she fights noble and true with the heart of a lion. |
How She Interacts w/ original characters
Minako doesn't interact with the original characters a whole lot, especially later on in the Russell Hino Epic. However, the entire beginning of the epic revolved around her interactions with Hino Kyodai. In her early interactions with Kyodai, she acted out her feelings very explicitly, letting the whole world know she's in love with the man. Yet, she also liked to spend time with Kyodai, whether it was going to movies, the mall, the park, or other places and activities. After her relationship with Kyodai, not only does she get less attention in the epic, but she also gets less interaction with the characters. However, when it comes to interacting with the original villains, she gets some of that well deserved attention. Though she may fight true as the former Sailor V, she does carry a slight grudge with the original villains. She develops these grudges from these villains harming her friends. Yet, her biggest grudge in the epic would have to be with the brainwashed Tuxedo Inferno. With his betrayal of the Sailor Senshi, who had begun to trust him, and his harming her friends and seriously wounding her, her being proved wrong about Tuxedo Inferno was a big slap in the face for her. In the end, after Tuxedo Inferno comes to his senses, she gains better respect for him. And after learning his identity, she develops a greater friendship with the warrior of fire. As she begins taking on more of a role in the Russell Hino Epic, expect her to have more interaction with not only the original characters, but also the villains. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Like in the Anime, Minako is quite ditzy at times and retains her guy-crazy attitude, both she acts out quite zealously. Though she has her fun moments, she does worry about her friends a lot, especially when they're in danger. In battle, her character does a complete 180 as her role as leader of the Senshi from the Silver Millennium takes over. Yet like in the Anime, she rarely asserts that leadership role. |
Memorable Quotes
"They brainwashed him. They kidnapped him and they drilled hatred into his head. They had him thinking he truly was of the Negaverse. He was good and they made him evil." ~Wildfire - Chapter 3 "None of us knew, not even Tuxedo Mask, whom Tuxedo Inferno claims was his best friend." ~Children of Fire - Chapter 3 "...I don't want another cat, I just want my Artemis." ~Armageddon For Artemis "Yes it's great, isn't it, walking with a star." ~A Burning Bounty "At least there's some difference between now and then. This time, Usagi knows she has feelings for him. Titanius not only struck Kyodai, but Usagi as well." ~A Burning Bounty |
Chiba Mamoru
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Mamoru first appeared in the Russell Hino Epic in Chapter 1 of Brother of Fire, meeting Kyodai, Rei, and the rest of the temple gang at a pizza restaurant. Mamoru probably serves one of the biggest roles in the Russell Hino Epic, both in the Silver Millennium and the present. He and Kyodai are the best of friends, both in the Silver Millennium and the present. This friendship remains strong even after Mamoru loses his memory early in the Sailor Moon R season. Mamoru never forgets his closest friends. He shares a number of similarities with Kyodai. These being their academic abilities, their ways with women, their slight modesty, their dreams of the Silver Millennium, and their roles in battle with the Sailor Team. Throughout the epic, Mamoru is the main participant of numerous slice-of-life conversations with people, especially with Kyodai. Though he plays the major role of Kyodai's best friend, he rarely appears in any other scene except those with Kyodai. But Darien does get his solo moments in the spotlight. As Tuxedo Mask and the Moonlight Knight, he takes on his usual role as protector of the Sailor Team, and a certain Princess Serenity. He plays major roles in the battles he appears in, and almost always appears right before Tuxedo Inferno does. He serves more of an active role in battle, taking to the enemy with a little more aggression, and a little more heart. |
How He Interacts w/ canon characters
Mamoru rarely shares the stage with the rest of the canon characters of the Russell Hino Epic. However, most of his interactions with the canon characters are as Tuxedo Mask. He is not only the protector of the Princess and the Sailor Senshi, but is also somewhat of a knight in shining armor to them. He fights well beside them and almost makes himself a part of the team, although he's his own independent man protecting the Princess. Late in the first season, after discovering Tuxedo Inferno's identity, Tuxedo Mask becomes closer to both him and his sister Sailor Mars and begins playing the role of "Protector of the Siblings" in battle. On 2 occasions, Mamoru has fought alongside them, once as Tuxedo Mask and once as the Moonlight Knight. In these battles, he kept the enemy busy long enough for Sailor Mars and Tuxedo Inferno to make their move against them. All in all, Mamoru serves as a true chivalrous knight, fighting alongside the Senshi and saving them from certain despair. |
How He Interacts w/ original characters
Much of the spotlight Mamoru gets is with one or more of the original characters of the Russell Hino Epic, especially with his best friend Kyodai. He is often found hanging out with either Kyodai or Kyodai and Obake (Daniel), being in the same college as they are. In his interactions with Kyodai, Mamoru is a trustworthy person whom Kyodai can talk to about just about anything, including his feelings for a certain blue-haired girl. Mamoru himself is more open with Kyodai and even shares a few jokes with him, something that Mamoru rarely does with anyone else. One example was his being pushed into Kyodai's arms by an angry Usagi. Rather than facing embarrassment, Mamoru made fun of it and wrapped his arms around Kyodai, making a funny comment at it. Even in public, when Mamoru is around the guys, he is more free to act a little immature and be a part of the crowd. Life isn't all work and no play. Gotta have some fun once in a while, Mamoru-kun. As for his interactions with another original character, particularly a certain psychic named Kokorono Meijin, he shares a more mature classroom relationship with her. The fact that he doesn't remember his past very well nor his identity as the Moonlight Knight saves him from being another one of Meijin's competitors. But, her little need for friends limits his interactions with Meijin to be purely at-school. Instead, they share their experiences in academics and their current studies with one another. This makes Mamoru unique in his dealings with her, while the other canon characters deal with her as a competitor. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Mamoru retains his more mature nature, yet he does have his moments of insulting Usagi, even behind her back. As his character in the Anime portrays, Tuxedo Mask / The Moonlight Knight shows up in the middle of a battle, just in the nick of time. His roles as Tuxedo Mask and the Moonlight Knight remain quite consistent with the Anime, but he takes on more of an active role in battle later in the Russell Hino Epic. Very little is referenced about his past and potential romance with Usagi. Mamoru sometimes pulls himself out of character when he hangs with the guys, sometimes sharing a few good laughs and pulling a few funny pranks. |
Memorable Quotes
"That was very noble of you to save that girl. But you still use your powers in the name of evil, seeing that you use them against the protectors of love and justice. Saving Serena may have been noble, but you can't live in both worlds, Tuxedo Inferno. You can't do good deeds to one, and evil deeds to another. Good day!" ~Wildfire - Chapter 3 "Brought into the world from the same nest, two birds begin their long journey together. Their journey is long, their efforts are savage, but their bond is forever, and guides them through. Such a bond is blessed, and shouldn't be tortured by a soulless being. Leave their siblinghood be." ~Mind Over Fire - Chapter 2 "Jeez, Russell. I didn't know you cared." ~Children of Fire - Chapter 1 |
Grandpa Hino
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Grandpa first appeared in the Russell Hino Epic in the first chapter, right after Kyodai had moved back into the Hikawa Jinja. He appeared in his usual stereotypical nature, talking about Kyodai bringing home girls for him to hit on. In the Russell Hino Epic, Grandpa fills out probably one of the better roles as head of the Hino household, though he doesn't appear much. When he does, he is often providing the comic relief or the mentorship. Since the Hikawa Jinja gets more attention through Kyodai and Rei, Grandpa gets more attention than in the Anime. Not only does his comical fun-loving personality get more attention, but also his role as a mentor to the family. In the first half of the epic, Grandpa is his stereotypical self, providing the comic relief through his wise-crack comments about girls and the likes. Yet, as the epic progresses on, Grandpa begins exerting his authority as an elder and as a mentor, yet still keeping his fun-loving attitude. He gets little stage time in the Russell Hino Epic, despite attention the Hikawa Jinja gets, but if this trend continues, Grandpa will get much more stage time in the future. |
How He Interacts w/ canon characters
As stated earlier, Grandpa plays the role of grandparent and mentor to everyone living at the temple. Though he seems rather lenient towards Rei as he is in the Anime, he does exert his authority as a grandfather now and then, and does show his love for her. As for Yuuichirou, Grandpa not only sees him as a pupil who wants his granddaughter, but also as his own grandson. Grandpa may give him the more intense training, but after 4 years of having him around, Grandpa has grown quite attached to him, almost as much as he has with Rei and Kyodai. |
How He Interacts w/ original characters
Ever since he brought Yuuichirou in, Grandpa began taking on the role as a family man again as he began taking others in for training. Gabianni came in a year after Yuuichirou, and Romano 6 months after. Sure Grandpa took them in for martial arts and Shinto training, but as with Yuuichirou, he's grown quite attached to them and has accepted them as members of his own family. Grandpa loves being a family man, and he shows it, with both tender and tough love, to everyone at the temple. Though he shows little interaction between him and Romano and Gabianni, he treats them very much like he treats Kyodai, Rei, and Yuuichirou. With his grandson, Kyodai, he plays the role of "grandfather" quite well. As with everyone else at the temple, he is tough with him, tender with him, and even a wise-crack with him at times. Kyodai is usually the butt of Grandpa's jokes about girls, and often teases him with questions as to why he never brings any home. Though he pokes fun at Kyodai for the flocks of girls throwing themselves at him, he is his grandson, nonetheless, and shows that relationship in almost every way. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Grandpa is quite perverted at times, as the Anime suggests, and uses that to tease Kyodai about girls. Grandpa is quite comical with his jokes and sarcasm, but leaves much room for his more tender, and tough side. He is more of a family man in the Russell Hino Epic, and his roles as grandfather and mentor get much more attention. |

Kumada Yuuichirou
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Yuuichirou first appeared in the Russell Hino Epic in Chapter 1 of Brother of Fire as Kyodai takes him and the others at the temple out for dinner. Throughout the Russell Hino Epic, Yuuichirou gets a lot more attention than he ever did in the Anime, and it shows. With so much revolving around the Hikawa Jinja, Yuuichirou is bound to get some stage time. Yuuichirou was brought in from the streets 4 years ago right before Kyodai moved in with his aunt and uncle. In his 4 years living at the temple, Yuuichirou has gone through extensive training, and has even become a part of the family. Yet, his feelings for Rei remain true, even after all these years. Yuuichirou fills the role of a temple worker and Shinto apprentice, just like in the Anime. But his added stage time and more people at the temple give Yuuichirou the major role as a member of the Hino household. He, along with Rei and Kyodai, bring a more lively environment to the Hikawa Jinja. Though he gets some attenion in the beginning of the epic, he gets more and more as the epic progresses. He even gets a few comical moments and even a more relaxed buddy-to-buddy conversation with Kyodai. Yuuichirou fits in well into the Hino family and Russell Hino Epic. |
How He Interacts w/ canon characters
Yuuichirou gets some interaction with the canon characters, especially with those at the Hikawa Jinja. With Rei, he may have developed feelings for her over the years, but he shares almost a family relationship with her. She may have been 10 when she offered him to move in, but he watched her grow into a beautiful young lady and even fell in love with her. This, however, doesn't hurt the family-like relationship he had already developed with her. She too has developed some feelings for him, which is rarely referenced both in the Russell Hino Epic and the Anime. She may act on it so little, but deep down inside, she shares his feelings. As with Grandpa Hino, Yuuichirou shares not only a mentor/protégé relationship with him, but also sees him as his own grandfather. This dual relationship only makes Yuuichirou's training tougher on him, but also brings him closer to Grandpa and making him more part of the family. Though Rei gave him a place to stay away from the streets 4 years ago, Grandpa was the one who took him in and began training him as a Shinto, as the Anime suggests. Grandpa is also one of very few people who has any idea of Yuuichirou's feelings for Rei, and one whom Yuuichirou trusts very much. Yuuichirou looks up to him like a father, and more than willingly goes through all the tougher training he dishes out at him. Family is great, isn't it? |
How He Interacts w/ original characters
Again, much of Yuuichirou's interactions with the original characters is with his "extended" family, namely Romano, Gabianni, and Kyodai. As a part of the family, he not only shares a great friendship with these characters, but also brotherly love. After Kyodai moved back in with Rei and the others, Yuuichirou began building up the friendship with him that he couldn't 4 years ago. After a while, Yuuichirou becomes closer to Kyodai more than even Romano or Gabianni, especially since they share a little more in common. Must be the Hino blood. Kyodai is one of the other people whom Yuuichirou really trusts. So he too knows about Yuuichirou's feelings towards Rei. The same goes for Yuuichirou himself, in that he is one of very few people whom Kyodai is more open to. Who knows, they might just become true brothers. Yuuichirou also shares a brother-like relationship with Romano and Gabianni. Since he's lived with them since Gabianni moved in a year after he did, and Romano 6 months after that, he's gotten to know them and make them a little more welcome as part of the family. They work together, train together, and even go out together often, especially since Gabianni was usually the one driving him and Romano everywhere before Kyodai moved in. He shares a common love for athletics, especially soccer, with Romano and a similar love for music and songwriting with Gabianni. They all get their share of fun, jokes, and even bickering and fights. It's family at it's finest. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Much is referenced about Yuuichirou's feelings for Rei, which remain unchanged even after living with her for 4 years. Yuuichirou moved into the temple 4 years before the first season, unlike in the Anime where he moved in towards the middle of the first season. Yuuichirou is more part of the family than just a temple worker brought in by Grandpa Hino. Through the many temple scenes throughout the epic, Yuuichirou gets much more stage time than in the Anime. |

Queen Beryl
Role in the Russell Hino Epic
Though Queen Beryl doesn't appear very much in the Russell Hino Epic, she plays a fair role in the Russell Hino Epic. As with the Anime, she is the supreme leader of the Dark Kingdom, and is often involved in planning out their attacks. She is always the one either praising or nagging the rest of the Dark Kingdom villains. Early in the Russell Hino Epic, it was her quest to defeat Tuxedo Inferno that brought Titanius into the epic. Queen Beryl's quest to destroy the Sailor Senshi and free the Dark Kingdom remain quite stereotypical throughout the 1st season parts of the epic. Yet, she gets some pretty good lines in most of the scenes she appears in. Queen Beryl might not get a whole lot of attention, but she's quite the star amongst the villain world indeed. |
How She Interacts w/ canon characters
As the Anime portrays, Queen Beryl is usually quite harsh towards the Four Kings. She expects nothing less than success from the Four Kings, and is always throwing insults at them when they fail their missions. She is also the one who plans most of their missions and is quite sassy in assigning them to her kings. Yet, with Kunzite, she shows a little more respect for him since he is the most powerful of the Four Kings. She respected him and trusted him enough to keep him with the Dark Kingdom after brainwashing Tuxedo Inferno. Kunzite is one of her most loyal subjects, and she treats him as such, giving him more special treatment than even Titanius. Kunzite is often the one she turns to whenever one of her other subjects, namely a certain bounty hunter, fails their mission. Yet, no matter how much respect she has for any of her subordinates, she hates them very much so, typical witch that she is. |
How She Interacts w/ original characters
Queen Beryl is actually glad to have Titanius in her ranks, yet she never shows it to him. She treats Titanius as she does any of the other Four Kings, quite harshly and like lower forms of life. What do you expect, she thinks she's a goddess in the universe. Of course she'll have that arrogant attitude of hers. Yet, she has her ways of manipulating Titanius, such as creating a bounty, raising a bounty, giving him only half his pay, even using his vendetta against Tuxedo Inferno to get him to work for her. She must think he's that good of a bounty hunter if she even thinks of manipulating him in that fashion. After she brainwashed Tuxedo Inferno, she gained a little better respect for his abilities as a warrior. As she did with Kunzite, she gave him special treatment and even sent him on his very own mission for the Dark Kingdom. She treated him as a member of the Dark Kingdom, yet she was a little less harsh with him, thinking she had him in a leash. After he regained his senses, though, her views of him reverted back to what they were, seeing him as a major threat to the Dark Kingdom. |
Anime vs. Fanfics
Queen Beryl's arrogant and saucy personality remain quite the same throughout the Russell Hino Epic. Queen Beryl gets few scenes in the Russell Hino Epic, yet she does make really good use of her stereotypical lines. Queen Beryl gives a little more favoritism to certain members of the Dark Kingdom, namely a certain beach-tanned, bleached blonde. |
